My past life…
After graduated from university, I got a job. After some time, I was called in by my boss to do my performance review or appraisal, and this would DIRECTLY result in my salary increment. Every year I worked so hard for 12 months..52 weeks..365 days, just to get one good appraisal so that I could get the ‘right’ increment. However, my expectation of ‘right’ increment was always different from my boss’s view. Nevertheless, I still looked forward to my once a year appraisal. How I wished l could have appraisal more often, so that I could get increment more frequent

In reality today…
In Malaysia, majority of people who are either fresh graduate or don’t have a degree would earn less than $2000. For those with degree and years of experience would earn between $2000 to $5000 (some never earn more than $5000 in their life!). For selected few or very good performers, would earn $8000-$15000 and above (of course with all the responsibilities and work pressure). Now, let’s look at an employee scenario. If a person earns $4000 a month, and at the end of the year she gets 5% increment (I know..I know..still not enough to cover the 8% inflation), the increment equals to $4000×5%=$200. If she performs better and gets 10%, the increment equals to $4000×10%=$400. “Congratulations! Your hard work in the last 12 months is being recognised by your company! And please continue the process if you enjoy your work.”
